Dolan welcomes meeting with Permanent Secretary for Health on suicide prevention services in Fermanagh

Published: 12 March, 2018

Jemma Dolan MLA has welcomed a meeting with the Permanent Health Secretary to discuss de-escalation / suicide prevention services in Fermanagh.

The Sinn Féin Fermanagh and South Tyrone MLA said,

"I had requested a meeting with the Permanent Secretary a few months ago to discuss the possibility for de-escalation / suicide prevention services in Fermanagh.

"I am pleased that this meeting is going ahead this week.

"I will be making the case for de-escalation services here in Fermanagh and exploring ways that these might be introduced.

"Whilst there are Community Mental Health Services in Fermanagh which are accessed through a GP or the emergency services, we must explore alternatives which would add to and complement these services so that those who may have suicidal ideation and want to seek help or support in times of crisis will have a service available to them.

As a member of the Assembly's All party group on Suicide Prevention, Ms Dolan reflected on the need for hope when in crisis.

"Often in times of crisis, individuals and their families or carers, struggle to know where or who to turn to for help. The one message I want people to know is that there is always help. As a society we need to ensure that we spread the message that suicides are preventable and that there is always hope.

"In addition to this meeting, my party colleague, Michelle Gildernew MP had also called for the Public Health Agency (PHA) to hold a consultation event for the future of a suicide prevention strategy in Fermanagh. This event will take place next Thursday 29th March at Fermanagh House and I would encourage everyone to register and take part to ensure we collectively call for adequate services in the future." -Ends/ Críoch
