43.4% of people in Fermanagh on Organ Donor Register, but it's not enough - Dolan

Sinn Féin MLA Jemma Dolan is calling on more individuals to join the organ donation register.

Speaking after attending a public consultation in Enniskillen, on promoting organ donation and transplantation across the north, the Fermanagh South Tyrone MLA said,

"A shocking statistic that has emerged from this consultation is that 14-15 people die each year while waiting on an organ transplant.

"I am proud to be part of the 43.4% of Fermanagh people registered on the organ donation register. This is above the average of 42% of the eligible population across the north. However, this number really needs to increase.

"It can be a difficult conversation to have with your loved ones, but up to five lives can be saved or changed for the better by receiving an organ. It is a sad fact that you are three times more likely to be a recipient of an organ than being a donor.

"I would encourage people to have this conversation with their families and ask themselves the question: if they would be willing to receive an organ to save their life, or the life of a loved one, where would it come from if more people don't register to donate?

"It is free and easy to become a donor and you can do so at https://www.organdonation.nhs.uk/" ENDS
