Dolan calls on public to respond to Stroke services pre-consultation

Published: 16 June, 2017

Sinn Féin MLA, Jemma Dolan, has called on public to respond to pre-consultation around stroke services at the SWAH.

Ms Dolan said,

"I strongly urge people to get involved with the upcoming pre-consultation on stroke services, it is an important opportunity for people to have their say.

"When it comes to patients receiving clot busting treatments, only eight hospitals in the North provide this service. The SWAH performs this life saving treatment more than any hospital outside the Belfast area. Any reconfiguration must take account of this and the best way to do that is to respond to the pre-consultation.

"When replying people should reiterate that time is of essence when dealing with a stroke. For residents in Fermanagh to receive the necessary assessments and care there must be a Stroke Unit based in the SWAH. Future stroke services must continue to have the expertise to deliver the necessary high quality care and to be accessible to those that need it. Time to treatment is just as important as quality of treatment. The public should remember the advice, when Stroke strikes, act FAST (Face, Arms, Speech, Time).

"Unique factors here in the North, such as large rural populations that are long distances from built up areas, must be taken into account when looking at the future of stroke services. Money should never be a deciding factor when making decisions which can make the difference between life and death.

"I also believe that the SWAH should be the first hospital stroke patients in parts of Donegal, Leitrim, Cavan and Monaghan are brought to. For many living in these neighbouring areas it is the nearest hospital to them with a Stroke Unit." - Ends/Críoch
