Cllr Anthony Feely welcomes announcement on slurry spreading

Published: 10 October, 2016

Sinn Féin Erne West Councillor Anthony Feely has welcomed the DAERA Minister's announcement on Slurry Spreading.

"I am glad that the Minister has taken on board the difficulties that have been facing farmers this year.

"After one of the wettest summers that I can remember, where a lot of farmers didn't manage to get their slurry out, this announcement will be welcomed.

"It's unfortunate that a blanket extension couldn't have been applied but at least the Department will consider all requests to spread after the 15th of October on a case by case basis.

"In the west of Fermanagh in particular, I cannot see how they could refuse any requests for extension by farmers. Ground conditions have been terrible all summer and, even if conditions improve, there will be a backlog as agri-contractors will be inundated with calls.

"I know of numerous farmers who haven't got their slurry out and who have already had to house their cattle as ground conditions are too wet. If ever exceptional circumstances existed they exist now." - Ends/Críoch
