Gender pay equality a must - McGahan
Published: 24 February, 2016
Sinn Féin MLA Bronwyn McGahan has called on OFM/dFM to bring forward regulations to deal with the matter of gender pay equality.
Speaking in the Assembly Ms McGahan said:
"Sinn Fein successfully brought an amendment to the Employment Bill at consideration stage to make sure gender equality is promoted.
"There is no doubt the gender pay gap reflects ongoing discrimination and inequalities in the workplace.
"We must have information relating to the pay of employees for the purposes of showing whether there are differences in the pay of male and female employees.
"This information needs to be of sufficient depth to shine a light on the causes of the pay gap and will need to be shared with both employees and trade union representatives.
"It must very clearly show how the pay gap was calculated and include an action plan as to how we correct it.
"The strategy and action plan will be important in addressing the gender pay gap. It's only by getting accurate and detailed information from employers on the extent of the gender pay gap and the rationale behind it that relevant action can be taken.
"It will be the responsibility of OFM/dFM to bring forward regulations within the timeframe."
