New library for Enniskillen on the cards

Sinn Féin representatives Sean Lynch MLA and Enniskillen Councillor Debbie Coyle met with the Chief Executive of Libraries NI, Irene Knox and Stephen Bleakley regarding a new library for Enniskillen.

The meeting came on the back of Mr Lynch raising the issue with the Culture, Arts and Leisure Minister Caral Ni Chuilin in the Assembly.

Speaking after the meeting, My Lynch says,

"Following the success of the Lisnaskea library and the standard to which it is completed, I highlighted the condition of the Enniskillen library building to the Minister in the Assembly a number of weeks ago.

"The Minister agreed that as Enniskillen library is the county's main library, serving a catchment of around 60,000 people, there is a need to provide a high standard of service.

"The library is deteriorating and useable space is limited. The Minister highlighted her concerns around the heritage collections and their need for better storage, which is an unease shared by Libraries NI and I am sure the entire community.

"Therefore, I called a meeting with Irene Knox to see how we can progress this further. At present there is a business case being drawn up by Libraries NI tolook at these deficiencies and to look at the options for relocation or a new library. This case will be put forward to the Department later this year.

"The lack of investment in Fermanagh is an ongoing issue and a new library in Enniskillen would be a major boost to the town and the county. Libraries are no longer just about books, they provide a neutral environment for community groups to meet and hold events, learning spaces for young people and records to allow us to delve into our history.

"My party colleagues and I recognise the need for this development and will continue to support it in any way we can." ENDS
