Cllr Feely welcomes EU fracking moratorium

Erne West Cllr Anthony Feely has welcomed the EU's call for a moratorium on fracking right across the entire EU.
Speaking after last Wednesdays vote Cllr Feely said;
"I was very pleased to see a majority of MEPs voting on this amendment last Wednesday, calling for a halt to any new shale gas explorations and extractions.
"I believe this vote sends out a clear message to those companies who seem hell bent on exploiting and destroying our beautiful country for short term profits.
"As usual our team of four Sinn Féin MEPs were to the fore of this debate, as Sinn Féin has been ever since hydraulic fracturing for shale gas first reared its ugly head.
"I was disappointed, but not surprised, to see all 4 Fine Gael MEPs and Jim Nicholson of the UUP join with the Tories to vote against the amendment. Hopefully the DUP member voting for the amendment signals a rethink from within the Department of Environment Trade and Investment regarding the issuing of licences for fracking.
"One thing is for sure. Sinn Féin will continue to oppose fracking at every level in Ireland and in Europe." ENDS
