McGahan praises role of foster carers

Published: 8 June, 2015

Sinn Féin MLA Bronwyn McGahan has spoken of her support for the annual Foster Care Fortnight (Monday 1st to Sunday 14th June 2015)and has praised the work of foster families across the North.

Speaking during Foster Care Fortnight, Ms McGahan says,

"Foster Care Fortnight aims to increase awareness of the need for more foster carers and recognises the central role that existing foster carers play in providing stable, caring homes for vulnerable children and young people.

"There are approximately 2,060 foster families in the North. However, there is always a need for more. The Fostering Network estimates that fostering services need to recruit a further 170 foster families in the next 12 months.

"The work of a foster carer should not be taken lightly. Like any other caring role, it requires patience, understanding and commitment but the passion and enthusiasm in which foster carers report their experiences is deeply humbling.

The Fermanagh South Tyrone MLA continues,

"As of March 2014, 2,156 children were living with foster families in the North. This is more than four-fifths (86 per cent) of the 2,501 children in care who were looked after away from home.

"I have the utmost respect and admiration for both the foster carers and the young people who are in receipt of care. They are making such a difference to so many lives and cannot be commended enough.

"I would encourage anyone that has any questions or is considering becoming a foster carer, to contact your local fostering team on 028 8775 2033 (Armagh and Dungannon areas), or enquire online at www.adoptionandfostering.hscni.net." ENDS
