The entire SDLP are asleep at the wheel
Published: 26 March, 2015
Sinn Féin Cllr Anthony Feely has questioned whether the entire SDLP are asleep at the wheel after Cllr John Coyle's petty attack on Minister O'Neill in this weeks Fermanagh Herald.
Cllr Feely said,
"The Minister offered her apologies due to illness which was announced at the beginning of the meeting so Councillor Coyle either was asleep or not paying attention.
"His attempt to use an illness in an attempt to make petty political points is despicable. If Councillor Coyle had been paying attention to the concerns of the farmers and rural community he would have been aware of the ministers interventions in this constituency.
"In recent times Minister O'Neill chaired a joint meeting with the UFU and local banks asking banks to be pro-active and flexible in their approach to the dairy sector.
"Sinn Fein hosted a public meeting on 5th March in Lisnaskea attended by several hundred farmers to discuss the new arrangements for the Single Farm Payments where Minister O'Neill was the main speaker.
"The minister has also been in contact with her counterpart in DEFRA seeking her support in discussions with Brussels in providing an effective safety net for dairy farmers. She is also seeking meetings with the European Agriculture Commissioner to press the case for further EU support for the dairy sector.
"I was at the meeting last Thursday night in Derrygonnelly and Minister O'Neill has agreed to return to Derrygonnelly for a future meeting.
"While the SDLP leadership cannot remember if they have selected a candidate for the constituency it now seems that the candidate is also suffering from amnesia or is so switched off to what is happening in the constituency he may well be asleep at the wheel".
