This party will stand up for the people of this island - Gildernew

Michelle Gildernew MP delievered the key note address to an audience of over 200 committed republican activists at the annual Sinn Féin Republican Youth Congress in the Carrickdale Hotel, today.

During her speech, the Fermanagh & South Tyrone MP said,

"In the year that has just passed it would be easy for us to focus on the negativity and attacks from our opponents, but we should always remember, that despite the vitriol against our cause, that we have been more successful than ever.

"In 2014 this party garnered the support of almost half a million voters; more than was achieved at the historic landslide of 1918. In the past year Sinn Féin Republican Youth activists have played an integral and inspiring role in furthering the cause of our Republican forebears. During these times of crippling and unfair austerity measures, our young people have borne the brunt of cuts and forced emigration.

"The people of Ireland are tired of the failed agenda of the elites and the bankers; they are tired of the austerity policies of the right wing; they are tired of skyping their children on Christmas morning from 3000 miles away because they cannot find employment at home; they are looking for an alternative. Sinn Féin is the alternative.

"When you canvass the doors of you community and are asked the tough questions, be strong in your answers and resolute in the knowing that this party will stand up for the people of this island." ENDS
