Cllr Feely welcomes the efficient payment of 91.3% of Single Farm Payments

Published: 8 December, 2014

Erne West Cllr Anthony Feely has commended DARD Minister Michelle O'Neill on the efficient payment of 91.3% of Single Farm Payments but has urged, where possible, the payment of the remainder of the imbursements.

The Sinn Féin Erne West Cllr explained, "Payments were due to begin on December 1st 2014 and to date, December 8th 2014 the Agriculture Minister Michelle O'Neill announced that 91.3% of single farm payments will be in the bank this week.

"This amounts to a stimulus to the economy of over £223 million and gives the vast majority of farmers an injection of cash in order to manage their farms. Being a farmer myself, I understand that the money has arrived at a good time - agricultural contractors need to be paid, land needs to be maintained and animals need to be fed.

"This week 27,000 farmers will receive their single farm payment which is a great achievement and it is obvious that the minister will meet her target of 93% of farmers paid by the end of December."

Cllr. Feely added, "Although I congratulate and thank the Minister and the Department, I would also appeal to them to aim to pay the remaining 8.7% of Single Farm Payments as soon as possible. It is a financially stressful time of year and I have already been approached by a number of local farmers who are awaiting their payments.

"This has a detrimental effect on mental health and not only affects the farmer but also those involved, such as the agricultural contractor and the feeding supplier." ENDS
