Lynch Backs 'Our Miles - Your Smiles' campaign

Sinn Féin MLA Seán Lynch has commended the service provided by Community Transport Network NI and with the threat of cuts looming, as vice Chair of the Regional Development Committee, will challenge the Department on any proposed cuts in the Draft Budget, which is out for consultation.

The call comes after Mr.Lynch hosted the launch of the campaign 'Our Miles - Your Smiles' in Stormont today.

The Fermanagh & South Tyrone MLA says,

"I was delighted to host the launch of the 'Our Miles - Your Smiles' campaign today. This is a vital service that is crucially important to the rural community, right across Fermanagh and right across the North. From Belleek to Roslea, from Fermanagh to Coleraine, it is benefiting hundreds of people, from a range of ages and abilites.

"The network has over 1,200 volunteer mini bus drivers and 216 volunteer car drivers. Only in rural areas would we get community support like this and without the contribution of the volunteers, it wouldn't be possible to run the service. Their role cannot go unnoticed.

"At the launch, local Garrison woman Mai McCaffery told us how important the service is to her. She lives 25 miles from Enniskillen, 11 miles outside of Garrison and 4 miles from the main road. She uses the service to go to the doctor, go shopping, go to group outings and even attend funerals."

"The network has three main concerns; the threat from public sector funding cuts, the threat from licensing proposals and the threat from potential tendering.

"It is testimonies and personal stories like Mai's that make it real to us - that if anything was to happen this service, it would be detrimental to the people. I know the difference this service is making in Fermanagh alone and I vow to join in on the 'Our Miles - Your Smiles' campaign. ENDS
